Interest Based Bargaining: What We Bargain
Interest Based Bargaining: A Strategy to Determine What We Bargain
Interest-Based Bargaining (IBB) is a collaborative approach to resolving labor and management disputes and bargaining working conditions by focusing on mutual and individual interests rather than positions. This method aims to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. IBB encourages open dialogue, common understanding of underlying concerns, and joint problem-solving to create solutions that satisfy the interests of both parties.
In my experience, this type of bargaining works best when one of the sides has a new idea or change that they want to implement. IBB helps team focus on “what” to bargain. As last week’s newsletter described, when in an inward mindset during negotiations, one party might seek to find fault with the other party to justify not acting on what is in the best interest of the other party. When one is operating from an inward mindset, a pivot to the outward mindset has the potential to change the way the teams negotiate and see each other’s interests. Having an outward mindset opens the door to IBB.
